Virtual reality is set to deliver a major boost for light rail safety with the launch of a new training tool, for anyone working on or near tram tracks.

The Virtual Track Awareness software aims to build on the success of a similar hazard perception system employed during tram driver training, and has been developed by the Light Rail Safety and Standards Board in partnership with simulator specialists AVANSIM and UKTram.

The software can be run on almost any computer, providing a safe environment to raise awareness of potential risks faced by track workers.

Steve Duckering, UKTram Operations Manager, led the project on behalf of the LRSSB and said the new software will have a crucial role to play in the recruitment and training of anyone working on or near light rail networks.

“Incorporating suggestions from members of the UKTram Operators Group, the tool is capable of recording test scores that can be used to assess an individual’s awareness of risks and suitability for working in what can be a hazardous environment,” he explained.

“Featuring a simulated track walk, the software can also be adapted by operators to include bespoke questions to meet their individual requirements while enhancing wider sector learning.”
