Supporting our members. Shaping the sector.
Driving the future of light rail across the British Isles

UKTram is the recognised trade body for the light rail sector, bringing together operators, manufacturers, suppliers, consultants, government and industry partners to help create a thriving, innovative and sustainable future for light rail.

As a not-for-profit membership organisation, we represent every modern light rail system across England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and the Isle of Man, while also supporting very light rail, heritage tramways and emerging transport technologies. Our role extends beyond representing the industry.

We bring people together to share knowledge, influence policy, develop technical guidance, support innovation and create opportunities for collaboration that strengthen the entire sector.

Governance

The structure of UKTram includes several functional groups and working groups that regularly meet to discuss a comprehensive range of industry issues and share best practices. Subgroups covering marketing, communications and HR have also been established and currently report to LROC (Light Rail Operators Committee).  All main advisory groups report directly to the UKTram Executive, while overall governance is provided by a board of directors comprising senior figures from across the sector.

Light Rail Operators Committee (LROC)

LROC provides a forum for members to share best practices, support each other, and address industry concerns. It aims to enhance light rail operations through collaboration and maintaining relations with stakeholders and authorities.

Owners and Authorities Group

The Owners & Authorities Group brings together senior representatives from network owners and local authorities responsible for light rail systems. It provides a forum to discuss shared challenges, influence national policy, support investment and  strengthen collaboration between operators, authorities and industry partners.

Executive Group

The Executive Group provides strategic direction and coordination across all UKTram advisory committees. Chaired by Managing Director James Hammett, it acts as the bridge between operational insight and board-level strategy, making sure UKTram remains focused on its core objectives.

Light Rail Engineering Group (LREG)

The LREG promotes a knowledge base for light rail engineering, sharing best practices and supporting members. It focuses on improving industry standards, providing guidance, and influencing legislation and procedures through active engagement.

Heritage Tramways Committee

The Heritage Tramways Committee supports heritage tramway undertakings, ensuring their needs are met and providing guidance. It liaises with authorities, organises events and advises on legislative and procedural changes to benefit heritage tramways.

Tramway Design Group

Established under the UKTram Centre of Excellence, the Tramway Design Working Group supports the development of new and emerging light rail systems across the UK. The group provides practical guidance on forward planning, design principles and the whole-life costs of operation,  helping project teams make informed decisions from the earliest stages.
