Phillip Terry
Lead Engineer
Our esteemed Lead Engineer, Phillip Terry.
Phil's initial interest in engineering was sparked during childhood, with a keen interest in understanding how things work.
Despite his early aspiration to become a draughtsman, the shift towards computer-aided drawing and the economic climate of the 1980s led him on a different path.
His journey in light rail began almost by chance in 2002 when he joined the Nottingham Tram Consortium as an Infrastructure Technician. This role marked the start of an illustrious career in the light rail sector.
Phillip's MSc in Railway Systems Engineering and Integration from the University of Birmingham and his rise to management are key milestones.
His involvement in the NET Nottingham Trams Phase 2 extension stands out as a significant project, where he played a pivotal role in extending and enhancing depot operations while ensuring the seamless service of trams.
One of the most challenging periods in Phil's career was balancing his MSc studies with his professional and personal life, particularly with the arrival of his daughter. This experience underlined the importance of teamwork and the willingness to seek help when needed.
Phil's advice? "Take on challenges and work hard at them. Sometimes you get there, other times you may need help. There are always people out there who are in the know.''
Looking ahead, Phil is enthusiastic about the evolution of light rail, emphasising the potential of innovative technologies to enhance safety and efficiency in the sector.
Phil envisions UKTram's role in supporting the industry's growth and development, acknowledging that we are not going to change the world overnight, but just a few snippets of pushing something forward, be it information or process can benefit the sector.
