James Hammett
Managing Director
James Hammett is the Managing Director of UKTram, whose journey with light rail began at a very young age at Seaton Tramway.
His passion for trams and the industry has been a lifelong affair, stemming from inquisitive childhood visits to a distinguished career shaping the future of light rail in the UK.
James' journey in the tramway world was about more than just learning the technicalities of trams and engineering. He's built lifelong friendships and gained invaluable mentorship that guided his career path.
Starting as a curious 10-year-old at Seaton Tramway, he quickly became part of the tramway family, turning trams' seats and even trolley poles (the ones he could reach)!
His professional journey began in 1995 when he began his 4-year Electrical Engineering and Service Maintenance apprenticeship, leading to significant projects like the Victorian station build at Seaton Terminus, depot expansion, restoration of Exeter Tram 19, and implementing the first of the new fleet of double deck trams.
Overcoming challenges and learning from every experience, James' dedication and skill saw him rise through various roles across light rail, shaping not only his career but also contributing significantly to the improvement and success of the sector.
Today, as the Managing Director of UKTram, James plays a crucial role in representing and advancing the light rail sector.
He is instrumental in ensuring the industry's voice is heard, developing strategies, and maintaining a vital link between sector members, the industry and governmental bodies.
James' story is one of passion, growth, and dedication. His leadership at UKTram continues to drive the sector forward.
We are proud to have him at the helm, guiding us in our mission to enhance light rail and other guided transport systems across the UK and the British Isles.
