A pioneering initiative aimed at driving innovation and economic growth by supporting small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the transport industry has won the backing of UKTram.
James Hammett, the organisation’s Managing Director, has joined the project review board of the Clean Futures programme, which plans to leverage £8 million to stimulate investment of over £30 million in new products for the transition to Net Zero.
It will support SMEs in existing supply chains, or those looking to move into new market sectors by providing them with technological and development assistance for their products, as well as business support to ensure market readiness and investment opportunities. Applications are currently open to join the first cohort of the Clean Futures Accelerator. 20 SMEs will be selected, each receiving up to £50K to trial their solutions.
James commented: “Light rail is already one of the most environmentally friendly forms of public transport, and we are delighted to be involved in this landmark project that promises to provide a real boost to SMEs with the potential to make it even greener.
“The innovation they can provide will also help to overcome barriers to future expansion of the sector, making light rail an even more attractive proposition for cities looking to reduce their carbon footprint while improving their transport networks.”
The two-year Clean Futures programme is a collaboration between Coventry University, Connected Places Catapult, the Black Country Innovative Manufacturing Organisation, and a host of other organisations from across the public and private sectors.
