UKTram joins global Transport Leaders at UITP meeting in Turin

UKTram recently attended the UITP Joint Bus and Light Rail Committee meeting, held in Turin from 25–27 March 2025.

Represented by our Lead Engineer, Phillip Terry, the event brought together international experts to explore integrated solutions for the future of public transport. The meeting opened with a joint session for both the Bus (BRT) and Light Rail (LRT) committees, showcasing best practice examples and case studies from across Europe.

Representation was made from Canada, the Americas and Asia. A key message from the session was that BRT and LRT systems when developed in tandem, provide ideal integrated and sustainable transport solutions for cities.

Breakout discussions focused on charging and grid infrastructure for both modes and traffic signal prioritisation. These sessions generated enthusiastic debate, with delegates sharing insights on innovation and implementation across diverse urban networks.

Delegates also visited the Gruppo Torinese Transporti (GTT) Venaria depot, observing how the facility had been adapted for charging electric buses and tram storage. The tour included a preview of the latest Hitachi trams, part of GTT’s varied fleet and growing zero-emission BRT programme. The day concluded with a networking dinner at the Unione Industriale Torino.

On the second day, Light Rail Committee attendees travelled via the historic GTT Sassi–Superga Rack Railway to the meeting venue at Superga station, 650 metres above sea level. With panoramic views of Turin and the Alps as a backdrop, the session included updates from ongoing LRT workstreams and a review and any learnings from the previous day’s breakout session and discussions.

The event concluded with a technical tour of the IVECO electric drive and battery manufacturing facility, offering insight into developments in battery-powered transport solutions.

Many thanks to  Serena Lacione (CEO GTT) and her team for hospitality, tours and venue in Turin.
