Survey highlights tram popularity

The country’s tramways are proving as popular as ever, with tram employees leading the charge to further improve customer satisfaction a survey has found.

UK Tram, the organisation representing the country’s light rail sector, has welcomed the findings of the independent study, which found that more than 90 per cent of customers were satisfied with their journey.

James Hammett, Managing Director of UK Tram, commented: “We know that tramways and other light rail systems have provided a real boost to cities where they operate, cutting congestion, reducing pollution and attracting inward investment.

“This latest research illustrates how they’re also proving a huge hit with the travelling public, and the figures show those working on the networks are helping drive their popularity.”

The annual Tram Passenger Survey, published by independent watchdog Transport Focus, found 89 per cent of customers expressed satisfaction with the helpfulness and attitude of staff – an increase of seven per cent on the previous year.

Overall satisfaction ratings remained unchanged at 91 per cent, as did those for  punctuality at 89 per cent.

“Operators can’t afford to be complacent and we’re working closely with them to further improve the customer experience as more people than ever discover the benefits of travelling by tram,” Mr Hammett said.

“We’re also working closely with our members to drive efforts to promote light rail as an effective means of tackling the transport challenges faced by many urban areas.”

The Transport Focus survey was conducted during autumn 2018 when nearly 5,000 passengers across four networks were asked how satisfied they were with their tram service.
