Training for tram drivers is set for a major boost with the launch of a new project by the organisation representing the UK light rail sector.
In July, UKTram will start working with colleagues from across the sector to develop a new set of standards for the people who train them.
Part of a wider National Occupational Standards project, the initiative will see publication of new guidelines setting out the key responsibilities of tram driver trainers, as well as required competencies.
Steve Duckering, the organisation’s Operations Manager, explained: “This exciting project follows on from the recent publication of the NOS for drivers and now looking at doing the same for trainers.
“The first stage of the process will draw on expertise from sector professionals, specialist consultants and other relevant organisations, with publication of the standards expected by the end of the year.”
NOS set out the skills, knowledge and understanding required to undertake a particular task or job role to a nationally recognised level of competence, helping to formalise training requirements for employers and employees across the UK.
They’re structured to reflect the key functions undertaken by individuals engaged in that job role with activities broken down and presented within specific units of competence.
Available to all organisations in the sector free of charge, as well as establishing best practice they can be used as a resource in a wide range of HR functions, including training, developing apprenticeship programmes, benchmarking and recruitment.
Anyone who would like to get involved with the Driver Trainer NOS project, which is expected to get underway in July, should register their interest by emailing info@uktram.co.uk.
