In this week’s news from the light rail sector – Networks across the country set to pay tribute to the sacrifices of the armed services past and present, an international artist becomes the voice of Metrolink, essential engineering works in Nottingham, and an upgrade to Tyne & Wear app.
Manchester Metrolink
International, critically acclaimed singer-songwriter Rita Ora has made her debut as the voice of Metrolink this week.
The musician and host of this week’s MTV EMAs will take over the tram announcements at selected stops to provide important tips on how to get around and plan journeys while also helping to put a smile on passengers’ faces.
The star-studded MTV EMAs ceremony is taking place at Co-Op Live this Sunday (November 10), and you can read the full story here.
Edinburgh Trams
Edinburgh Trams is joining the city in paying tribute to the armed services by offering free travel to events on Remembrance Sunday (November 10) and Armistice Day (Monday, November 11).
The operator is also donating £500 to the Scottish Poppy Appeal to help the Armed Forces community access life-changing support.
As a veteran himself, Lea Harrison, Edinburgh Trams’ Managing Director, said he was immensely proud to see how businesses continue to show respect for all men and women who have paid the ultimate price serving their country, and you can read more here.
West Midlands Metro
On Sunday, November 10 (Remembrance Sunday), and Monday, November 11 (Armistice Day), West Midlands Metro trams will observe a moment of silence to honour veterans and active military personnel, joining the nation in remembering those who have fallen in the two world wars and more recent conflicts.
At 11 a.m. on both days, all tram services will pause for a two-minute silence, allowing both colleagues and passengers to reflect on the sacrifices and courage shown by our nation’s servicemen and women.
Sophie Allison, Managing Director of West Midlands Metro, said the tramway was also offering free travel to veterans and current Army, Navy, and Air Force personnel attending Remembrance events, and you can find out more by clicking here.
NET
Essential overnight network maintenance work is set to be carried out in November, affecting the QMC and Beeston Zones.
The work will enable NET to adjust the electricity wires within its overhead line equipment, strengthening the network and reducing the risk of technical failure.
There will be no trams running between the University of Nottingham and Cator Lane tram stops between 4.00pm on Sunday, 17 November, until the end of service on that day, with Central College, Chilwell Highroad, Beeston Centre, Middle Street and University Boulevard all closed as the maintenance work takes place.
Tram users are advised to check affected routes before travelling and to allow for additional time on journeys. Further details can be found here.
Tyne & Wear Metro
Operator Nexus has announced a significant new update to its Pop app that gives customers personalised travel alerts.
The new feature on the app is designed to keep them in the know about the Tyne and Wear Metro service straight onto their smartphone.
Once users have opted in, they’ll receive timely and relevant information, keeping their Metro travel as smooth and stress-free as possible.
