In this week’s news from the light rail sector – Edinburgh Trams promotes trips to the theatre, plans for a major revamp of DLR station, essential works in Nottingham, tramway museum makes key appointments and a New Year message from the LRSSB.
DLR
Transport for London has revealed the latest updates regarding a major revamp coming to a station on the Docklands Light Railway (DLR).
London World reports that following planning approval from Newham Council in 2024, Pontoon Dock Station is getting six new escalators and a mezzanine level to help reduce queuing, improve journey times during busy times and cater for future passenger demand.
The Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) understands work is expected to start in the summer of 2026 and will see improvements completed by the summer of 2028. Currently, passengers can only access the station by taking the lifts or using the stairs, which consist of 80 steps in total.
Edinburgh Trams
The popular tram network is inviting theatregoers to ‘glide’ to performances at Edinburgh Playhouse and has published a guide to productions and concerts being staged this month.
The Playhouse is served by the tramway’s Picardy Place stop, which is also a short walk from St James Quarter, where visitors to the theatre can go for food before the shows.

Services between Wilkinson Street and The Forest will be suspended on Sunday, January 26, to allow for essential repair work.
To minimise disruption, a replacement bus will run every ten minutes and will operate throughout the day between Wilkinson Street and The Forest. This will also pick up passengers at bus stops on Radford Road, close to the Radford Road and Hyson Green tram stops.
Tram users are advised to check affected routes before travelling and allow extra time when planning their journey. Regular tram services are set to resume at 6.00 am on Monday, January 27, and more details can be found here.
Heritage
The National Tramway Museum, based at the Crich Tramway Village, has announced two significant appointments with a Chief Executive Officer, and the new role of Volunteer Coordinator and Mentor has been confirmed.
British Trams Online reports that Graham Bennett is the new Chief Executive Officer, whilst Victoria Dickerson takes on the Volunteer Coordinator and Mentor role.
These strategic appointments will strengthen the museum’s leadership and volunteer programs as it continues its mission to preserve and share the history of light rail systems in the UK, and you can read the full story here.
LRSSB
The year ahead promises to be a transformative one for light rail as the organisation responsible for sector safety looks to build on the initial success of projects already driving down the risk of serious incidents on UK tramways.
Carl Williams, Chief Executive of the Light Rail Safety and Standards Board, has stressed that the organisation will continue to evolve in line with the sector’s needs while collaborating with its strategic partners, including the Office of Rail and Road and other key stakeholders.
In a New Year message, he also celebrates landmark achievements in 2024, and you can read more here.
