Light Rail Awards

Dozens of submissions have already been received for this year’s Global Light Rail Awards, but there is still time to enter the prestigious competition.

This year the winners will be announced at a gala event at the Bloomsbury Ballroom in London on Wednesday, October 2, and honours to be contested include UK Operator of the Year, Most Improved System and Team of the Year.

Further information about the event, and details on how to enter an award, are available here.

West Midlands Metro

An exciting new partnership with some of Birmingham’s top attractions, now offers fantastic deals for memorable days out in the city for Metro customers.

Tram ticket holders can now enjoy up to a 25 percent discount at the National SEA LIFE Centre and LEGOLAND® Discovery Centre thanks to a new partnership between the Metro operator and Merlin Entertainments Ltd.

Additionally, visitors to these popular Merlin attractions will enjoy extra savings on their tram tickets, making their family outings even more affordable, and you can find more details here.

Edinburgh Trams

Ahead of an extremely busy few weeks in the city, Edinburgh Trams is reminding customers that it is not possible to carry bikes during the festival season.

Due to limited space on board trams, restrictions apply that prevent cycles from being taken on the trams throughout August.

Sarah Singh, Edinburgh Trams’ Head of Service Delivery, said the move was intended to ensure the safety and comfort of our customers during one of the busiest times of the year, and you can find the full story here.

DLR

Transport for London (TfL) has published the consultation report on plans for a cross-river extension of the DLR from Gallions Reach to Thamesmead, via Beckton Riverside.

Local media reports that a majority of respondents were supportive of the proposals, with 58 per cent of respondents saying the extension would make their journeys quicker around their local area.

75 per cent said it would make journeys into wider east and southeast London easier, and the full report in the London Post can be found here.

Tyne and Wear Metro

Buses are to replace trains on a busy section of the Metro line between Wallsend and St James in Newcastle for nine days to allow for a £1.7m programme of bridge and tunnel modernisation work.

Structural repairs on four different Metro bridges and a section of tunnel in the Manors area of Newcastle are being carried out during the major line closure.

Works on bridges at Stoddart Street and New Bridge Street – both of which carry traffic over the Metro lines – will include grit blasting, repainting, steelwork repair, waterproofing and road resurfacing.

The project is part of the £43m Nexus is investing in Metro infrastructure modernisation schemes this year, and the full story can be found here.
