Light Rail news roundup 29th April 2022

In light rail news this week – NET sponsors World Masters Hockey, wheel sets in production for Tyne & Wear’s new fleet, weekend Red Line changes on Luas and big bank holiday weekend for Blackpool Heritage.

A comprehensive guide for applying the most recent regulations on the design and management of new or extended tramway systems has been published this week

Mark Ashmore, Safety and Assurance Manager at the Light Rail Safety and Standards Board, said the new publication – LRG23.0 Application of the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 – would prove to be an invaluable aid to the sector.

The document, produced by the LRSSB, provides an exhaustive guide to every aspect of the regulations and how to comply with all the legal requirements for light rail projects of all sizes and you can read the full story here.

NET  

Nottingham’s tram network, has been announced as the title sponsor of the World Masters Hockey Cups 2022 taking place in the city this summer.

After several years of cancellations and disruption due to COVID-19, the Over 35 and Over 40 Masters World Cups will take place in the Nottingham Hockey Centre between Friday, August 12 and Sunday, August 21.

Over 50 teams will compete in the tournament from over 15 different countries including Australia, Ghana, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, South Africa and Egypt and you can find out more here.

Tyne & Wear Metro

A key milestone has been reached in the production of the Tyne and Wear Metro ‘s new train fleet, with work getting underway on the all-important wheel sets.

Stadler, the Swiss train manufacturer which is building 46 new trains on behalf of Metro’s operator Nexus, has started the manufacturing process on the structures with the train wheels attached that carry the bodyshells.

The production of 276 bogies, six for each new Metro train, is taking place at Stadler’s factory in Valencia, as reported here.

Luas

There will be temporary changes to Red Line services over the next two weekends, with no services on the Red Line.

The changes are required to facilitate essential engineering works that will take place on Saturday and Sunday this weekend and Friday, Saturday and Sunday next week.

The Green Line is not affected by these works and more details can be found here.

Heritage

Blackpool Heritage Tours are back with another big weekend this Bank Holiday with a special event taking place between Saturday, April 30 and Monday, May 2.

The vintage weekend will include Promenade, Coastal and Evening Tours, running alongside the addition of some Heritage Bus Tours to Fleetwood and Lytham St Annes. The tramway’s Ghost Tram will be making an appearance.
