Light Rail news roundup 27th January 2023

In this week’s news from the light rail sector – Work is underway on a new depot in the West Midlands, overhead lines to be connected in Edinburgh as part of the Trams to Newhaven project, engineering work in Sheffield and a student travel offer from NET in Nottingham.

Sheffield Supertram

To allow essential track replacement works to take place, there will be no service between Sheffield Station, Halfway and Herdings Park after around 21:00 on Sunday, January 29.

Valid tram tickets will be accepted on local bus services operating in the affected areas and full details of the service suspensions can be found here.

NET

Nottingham’s tram network is slashing the price of travel for students with a 6-month tram pass that will be available for the bargain price of £150 at three key student events over the coming weeks.

From 23rd January until 28th February, the student pass will be reduced from £220 to £170 and available to buy through the NetGo! App or at the Travel Centre.

However, NET will be offering a one-time code to slash a further £20 off that price, taking the deal down to £150 and meaning unlimited travel on the tram network for roughly 80p a day for 6 months. To read more, click here.

Edinburgh Trams

There will be changes to tram services in Edinburgh next month with the connection of the new overhead power lines on the Trams to Newhaven project to the existing network.

To enable this essential work to be completed as quickly and safely as possible, trams from the airport will be running as far as West End stop for one week between Monday, February 13, and Sunday, February 19 (inclusive). There are no changes to the tram frequency.

Alternative arrangements have been put in place enabling visitors and local residents to complete their journey, and further details can be found here.

Tyne & Wear Metro

It was the end of an era for the Tyne and Wear Metro last week as the old depot at Gosforth closed its doors for the final time.

The 100 year-old facility, home to Metro for 43 years, will be demolished now Stadler has transferred their maintenance teams across to the brand new £70m depot which has been built on the same site.

Staff have had a nostalgic final week in the old train sheds and maintenance shop, and you can read the full story here.

Extension Projects

West Midlands Mayor Andy Street with stakeholders at the Metro tram depot in Wednesbury as expansion work gets underway.

Work is now underway on the expansion of the West Midlands Metro depot at Wednesbury to accommodate the increased fleet of trams.

New extensions to the line in Birmingham and Wolverhampton city centres and a new line to Dudley town centre – currently under construction – mean that more trams are required to operate on the growing network and more capacity needed to store and maintain them. So regional transport bosses have now launched a £43 million redevelopment of the Metro depot site in Potters Lane, and you can read the full story here.
