Celebrating excellence and innovation at the 2020 Global Light Rail Awards

Guests from around the world gathered to celebrate another year of outstanding achievement at the 2020 Global Light Rail Awards – held virtually for the first time on Wednesday 11th November.

Now in its 14th year, and well-known as the industry’s ‘Oscars’, the judging panel evaluated submissions in 16 categories, noting that “this was one of the toughest years yet to choose the winners. It is fantastic to see so many joint entries, showing that industry partners are sharing best practice and expertise as we all look to bring down costs, improve safety and sustainability and deliver the best possible passenger experience.”

The event, organised by Mainspring and supported by industry publication Tramways & Urban Transit, was hosted once again respected broadcaster and journalist Nicholas Owen. The headline supporter for another year was London Trams operator Tram Operations Limited, with category sponsors from many disciplines across the sector.

UK Light Rail Minister Baroness Vere delivered the event’s welcome address, saying:

“During Covid-19, Light Rail services have been vital to our response to the pandemic. The incredible work of the entire industry and the countless stories of individuals delivering over and above in unprecedented circumstances, mean Light Rail will continue to play a vital role in the UK economy going forward.

“I want to pay tribute to all the winners, and everyone who attended the evening – who delivered exceptional service in what has been a year in which Light Rail has shown the teamwork, creativity and innovation to maintain services during this difficult time. In England, we have provided grant funding of over £160 million, reflecting just how important these services are for local economies and communities.”

Mainspring Managing Director Matt Johnston added: “In what has been an enormously challenging year for everyone, I am delighted that last night’s virtual running of the Global Light Rail Awards was such a success.

“We’ve all had to adapt to new ways of living and working over the past 12 months and whilst we look forward to meeting people in person as soon as possible, we have shown it is possible to combine physical and virtual elements in a model which brings colleagues from across the industry together – no matter where in the world they are.”
