The Global Light Rail Awards on 2nd October marked another extraordinary celebration of the dedication, achievements and innovations that define the light rail sector.


Known ats the Light Rail 'Oscars,' this annual occasion organised by Mainspring is recognised as the only awards event dedicated exclusively to light rail and urban transit.


This year, it was hosted at the iconic Bloomsbury Ballroom in London, and the event was undoubtedly spectacular. It attracted over 150 entries from 12 countries, demonstrating the industry's reach and influence worldwide.


17 award categories covered everything from environmental initiatives to safety and customer experience. Year on year, the awards showcases the diversity and passion of this sector. This year's event was sponsored by First Tram Operations, included a unique and memorable "Strictly Come Dancing" theme, adding an extra layer of glamour to the evening.

As the authoritative voice of light rail in the UK and Ireland, we were proud to sponsor the categories for Most Improved System and UK Operator of the Year. It is always a privilege to play a part in the recognition of the tireless efforts of operators and suppliers who shape the light rail landscape.


Evening Highlights



The Global Light Rail Awards celebrated outstanding achievements across several categories. Notable winners this year underscored the sector's commitment to sustainability, customer service and operational excellence.


Best Environmental & Sustainability Initiative Keolis Nottingham was awarded for its biodiversity initiatives, recognising its efforts to protect and promote green spaces within Nottingham's network. Keolis Hyderabad and Keolis Dijon also received commendations for their renewable energy and energy optimisation projects, respectively.


Richard Brown Best Customer Initiative:  Edinburgh Trams' "Support for Swifties" initiative took home the award, recognising the team's exceptional customer care for fans attending the highly anticipated Taylor Swift concerts. Edinburgh Trams had a record breaking weekend with the highest number of passenger journeys for a single weekend in the history of the network. Keolis Nottingham was highly commended for its "Accessibility for All" initiatives, recognising its collaboration with Widgit to create symbol guides that support those who may struggle to travel independently on our tram and its work with the Thomas Pocklington Trust to improve tram travel for individuals who are blind or visually impaired. Supplier of the Year Congratulations to UKTram Member Mott MacDonald, highly commended as supplier of the year for supporting light rail rail transformation in Wales. And, well done to the winner, Bidvest Noonam for supporting KeloisAmey Metrolink.

Significant Safety Initiative: The Midlands Metro Alliance and Tranvía de Zaragoza received high commendations, each contributing significantly to safety through innovative LED lighting and risk-based safety approaches.


Team of the Year

One of the night's proudest moments was the recognition of the UKTram Centre of Excellence (CoE) as "Team of the Year." The CoE's proactive approach in developing resources like the 'Route Map' and 'Pre-route Map' to support new tramway proposals was given the recognition it deserves. We couldn't be prouder!


 

Most Improved System Sponsored by UKTram, this award acknowledged Edinburgh Trams for its record-breaking year and significant service enhancements.


West Midlands Metro was also highly commended for their continuous system improvements.


UK Operator of the Year Congratulations to KeolisAmey Metrolink for this win! Another category sponsored by us, this award recognised Metrolink's operational achievements. A huge well done to West Midlands Metro who was highly commended, reinforcing the high standards in UK operations. Judges Special Award

Technical Engineer, Gavin Lloyd has been a member of the West Midlands Metro team, playing a vital role in Metro operations. Diagnosed with Motor Neurone disease and a life expectancy of up to two and a half years. Ten years on, Gavin has been recognised for his invaluable contribution to the light rail sector in this Judges Special Award. Although Gavin was unable to attend the awards, he was well represented, and the the standing ovation dedicated to his journey is a testament to this inspiring individual.

Worldwide Operator of the Year

We extend our congratulations to Transdev Dublin Light Rail for taking home the top honour for operator excellence. This award reflects their robust crisis management and dedication to exceptional customer service, further establishing Transdev's position as a world leader in urban mobility solutions.

Another Memorable Night for the Industry


The Bloomsbury Ballroom was buzzing with excitement as attendees from around the world came together to celebrate the shared commitment and achievements of the light rail community.


This event consistently recognises the sector's resilience amidst challenges and shines a light on the rising stars and longstanding innovators shaping the future of the industry.


As the night came to a close, there was a renewed sense of pride and inspiration among attendees. The evening reminded us of the industry's dedication and collective achievements, not forgetting the exciting journey that lies ahead.

As we look to the future, the Global Light Rail Awards continue to serve as a benchmark of excellence, reminding us of the sector's unique ability to drive sustainable, efficient, and innovative urban transit solutions.
