Tyne and Wear Metro

It was in August 1980, that the Tyne & Wear Metro officially opened its doors to the public.

Serving the communities of Tyne and Wear, this iconic light rail system has connected people and provided reliable transportation for over four decades.

Tyne and Wear Metro is one of the most well-known and longest-serving brands in the North East of England. The iconic yellow and black logo stands out on cubes at stations.

In the year ending March 2022/2023, the network saw an impressive increase to 29.3 million journeys. As the UK's busiest light rail system outside London, Tyne and Wear Metro has been a pioneer in modern light rail services.

Now, operator Nexus is taking innovation further with 46 brand-new trains crafted and maintained by the renowned Stadler.

The new trains, which replace Metro's current 43-year-old rolling stock up to 2025, will have modern features, including linear seating, charging points, and air conditioning, and will deliver a step-change in accessibility.
