Manchester Metrolink
Light Rail
The Metrolink tram system is one of Greater Manchester’s major rapid transit success stories.
Over the years, Metrolink has expanded to become the largest light rail network in the UK. Services now run on eight lines to 99 stops covering nearly 64 miles.
Transport for Greater Manchester continues to explore new ways to expand the Metrolink network and develop new rapid transit schemes as part of the Greater Manchester Transport Strategy 2040.
In the medium-term (to 2030) new Metrolink lines are being considered, along with potential for ‘tram-train’ services, and longer-term options being explored include tunnelled ‘metro-style’ services under the city centre.
Throughout the year ending March 2023, Manchester Metrolink celebrated a substantial 38.5% surge in passenger journeys, reaching a milestone of 36 million.
Looking ahead, more than £20 million is earmarked for the next 12 months to enhance the Metrolink network.
This investment, part of a substantial £147 million package set to unfold by 2027, is crucial for maintaining the safety, reliability, and accessibility of the service.
This funding initiative, sourced from the government’s City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement (CRSTS), was recently greenlit by the Bee Network committee.
As Manchester Metrolink continues to evolve and expand, it remains a pivotal player in transforming the landscape of public transportation within the region, setting an example of sustainable urban mobility.
The first M5000 trams were introduced in 2009, and replaced the former fleet of thirty-two T-68 and T-68A trams, which had operated the network since opening in 1992.
