London Tramlink

Tramlink, a pivotal piece of London's transport network.

In the 1980s, escalating motor traffic in central Croydon led to a study by London Regional Transport on reintroducing trams to alleviate congestion and enhance connections, particularly to the underserved New Addington area.

This idea became reality when Tramtrack Croydon Limited won a 99-year concession in 1996, following a bill passed in 1991.

Opening in 2000, the tram system revitalised several disused railway alignments, echoing the path of the historic Surrey Iron Railway from 1803.

Today, the network extends from Croydon to key destinations like Wimbledon and New Addington, interfacing with other transit modes including the Tube and National Rail.

Managed by TfL, since a 2008 buyout, the system has seen significant upgrades, such as the introduction of six new trams in 2012 which increased central Croydon services and a recent boost in frequency between Wimbledon and Croydon in 2016.

These enhancements underscore a commitment to sustainable urban mobility and the continuous improvement of the tram network.

Tram Operations Limited (TOL), a subsidiary of First Group, operates trams day-to-day.
