Summit sets the scene for UKTram’s future plans Friday September 20, 2024

Effective cyber security, reducing the risks posed by terrorists and the use of virtual reality to tackle anti-social behaviour have all been highlighted during a high-profile summit for light rail leaders.

While protecting networks from external threats proved a key theme of the event in Birmingham yesterday (September 19), the summit also provided the opportunity to celebrate successful initiatives to secure a sustainable future for light rail in the UK.

Delegates were also urged to help play a part in helping to shape the future of the sector’s representative body, UKTram, as it plans a strategy for 2025 and beyond.

James Hammett, UKTram Managing Director, explained: “We are operating in a new political landscape, and it’s vital our plans evolve to embrace fresh opportunities while addressing the many challenges faced by our members.

“The summit enabled us to engage with figures from across the sector during a day of topical debate while providing a platform for use to encourage them to engage in a consultation on the future priorities of the organisation.

“Our immediate plans include stepping up the work of our functional working groups and establishing closer ties with the new government, but as we approach the end of our existing three-year business plan, it’s vital we set out a clear plan to build on our successes to date.”

Organised by UKTram in partnership with the Light Rail Safety and Standards Board, the Light Rail Summit was held for the second year running at the headquarters of the Institute of Engineer and Technology.

It also included a round-up of the work done by the LRSSB to enhance tramway safety, and presentations on a tram-train project by Transport for Wales in Cardiff, fatigue management best practice, and the role men need to play when it comes to gender diversity in the workplace.

“I would like to thank all the speakers for providing fascinating insights into the challenges faced by the sector, and for suggesting possible solutions,” James said.

“Together they helped to deliver another landmark event that will shape the debate on how we can help drive future growth and success for the sector as part of integrated transport networks,” he added.
