The UK light sector has been raising its profile on the international stage, with UKTram leading discussions at two high-profile events.
At a recent conference in Australia, delegates heard about its world-leading commitment to light rail research, innovation and collaboration, with the Managing Director of UKTram highlighting a broad spectrum of successful initiatives.
During a live, online linkup with the Urban Rail Conference in Brisbane, James Hammett explained how tramways and similar transit systems in the UK were working together to overcome the barriers to the future expansion of the sector.
“As the representative organisation for light rail in the UK, we were asked to demonstrate how our approach towards collaboration and sharing best practice is setting an example for others to follow,” he explained.
“Thanks to the commitment of members, the expertise of the Light Rail Safety and Standards Board, and the support of our functional working groups, the UK really is at the forefront of light rail innovation.”
Slightly closer to home, James was also flying the flag for colleagues in the UK at a meeting of the International Association of Public Transport (UITP) in Bordeaux.
Hosted by Keolis Bordeaux Métropole Mobilités, the event saw delegates discuss a wide range of topics, including the advantages and challenges of catenary-free systems, maintenance strategies and effective tendering processes.
A full report of the meeting will be presented to the next UKTram Executive meeting in July.
